The power fruit-Oranges

orange
Orange is the most common citrus fruit, a storehouse of several beneficial vitamins and nutrients. Oranges are an excellent source of vitamin C. One orange contains 116.2% of daily requirement of vitamin C. Vitamin C is the primary water-soluble antioxidant in the body. It fights free radicals and prevents cell damage. As a result of free radical damage to cells is cancer, especially in areas where cell division is rapid know as digestive system. That 's why vitamin C is associated with a reduced risk of colon cancer.

Free radical damage can result in painful inflammation. Vitamin C prevents free radical damage and thus associated with reduced severity of inflammatory conditions like asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The free radicals in oranges oxidize the cholesterol and can also makes it stick to the walls of arteries building up plaque. Since vitamin C neutralizes these free radicals and helps to prevent oxidation of cholesterol.

Vitamin C also vital for the proper function of the immune system and helps to prevent colds and recurrent ear infections. Oranges contain a large amount of phytonutrient compounds. These phytonutrients, when combined with vitamin C, work as effective anti-oxidants. Another phytonutrient, herperidin, found in oranges has been shown to lower blood pressure as well as cholesterol and also has anti-inflammatory properties in the human body for a healthy heart, and a healthy body. Citrus is most effective against mouth, larynx and pharynx, and stomach cancers. The folate content of oranges protects against heart disease and potassium lowers blood pressure and protects against stroke.

Oranges are rich in essential nutrients but low in glycaemic index[GI], that they are effective in fighting fat, which increase the risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke. Skin deep compounds found in the citrus fruit peels helps lower the cholesterol more effectively than some prescription drugs, and without side effects. Although a variety of citrus fruits contain these cholesterol-lowering compounds, they are most abundant in peels of oranges.

Oranges contain large amounts of fiber. One orange provides 12.5 per cent of the daily requirement of fiber, which helps in reducing of high cholesterol levels. Fiber is also helpful in keeping blood sugar levels under control and thus oranges are a healthy snack for people with diabetes. Fructose in oranges helps keep blood sugar levels from rising after eating. The fiber in oranges is also helpful in reducing constipation or diarrhea. Orange juice is helpful in preventing kidney stones and relieving inflammation. Just peel it or squeeze it, oranges are the way to go.

Apple-Cranberry fruit sauce

Apples and cranberries both can be sweet and tart among Fruits. Apples are even good to use in other dishes like in chicken. I also like to make a hash with sliced apples,  potatoes and onions.

Ingredients:

3 medium apples (ex., Rome or good baking apples)
  1. 1 can cranberry sauce
  2. 1 tbsp of lemon juice
  3. 1/8 tsp of ground ginger
  4. 3 tbsp of butter
 Preparation:

Preheat the oven upto 350 degrees. Cut the apples in half and remove the seeds in the middle. By taking out the seeds, each apple half should look like a bowl. Arrange the apples in a 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Then, mix together the cranberry sauce, lemon juice, and ginger. Spoon this mixture over the apples. Put some of the butter on the center of each apple slice. Put the apples in the oven and bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, take the baking dish out of the oven and let it cool slightly. Then add nuts with it to have the flavour.

Fruits cake-Tips to prepare at home

The wonderful combination of nuts and dried fruits with barely is enough to make cake to hold it all together. This Fruit Cake recipe is adapted it with raisins, currants, dried cranberries, dried figs and prunes, dried apricots, and candied fruit and peel (candied fruit is preserved fruit that has been dipped several times in a concentrated sugar syrup). Nuts are also included as is ground almonds.

Fruit Cake

Take a nonstick vegetable spray, an 8 inch (20 cm) spring form pan with a removable bottom. Apply the bottom of the pan with buttered parchment paper. Preheat the oven to 320 degrees F. Beat the butter and sugars until light and fluffy using bowl of your electric mixer, or with a hand mixer.Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Add the brandy, juice and zest of the orange, and zest of the lemon.

Then fold in the ground almonds, chopped nuts, and all the dried and candied fruits. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder and fold this into the cake batter.if desired, decorate the top of the cake with blanched almonds.

Place the pan on a larger baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.Reduce the temperature to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) and continue to bake the cake until a long skewer inserted into the center of the cake comes out with just a few moist crumbs. Remove the cake from the oven and place on a wire rack to cool completely. With a skewer poke holes in the top surface of the cake and brush with a little brandy. Wrap the cake thoroughly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil and place in a cake tin. This cake will keep several weeks or it can be frozen.

Fruitcake-Making Tips

To prevent over-browning, line the bottom and sides of the pan with foil. If you leave extra foil overlapping the sides, be easier to remove the cake.

When baking, set the fruitcake pan in a baking pan half-filled with water to prevent burning around the edges.

Let fruitcake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool completely.

For long-term storage, bury the linen and foil wrapped fruitcake in a tin filled with powdered sugar.
